According to General Rick Hillier, 80% of our deployed troops would not get a Christmas present if it wasn’t for OP. Santa Claus. Operation Santa Claus is a donation program that sends gifts to our Canadian Forces serving overseas. They collect items like travel games, hard candy, Tim Horton’s cards, and toothbrushes. Items that are easy to carry and easy to ship. Toothbrushes, according to Op. Santa Claus Calgary contact, Christie Johnson, are especially welcome. Imagine dropping your only toothbrush in the sand and having to use it for the next several months!
Christmas cards and letters of support are very important as well. Perhaps you bought a few boxes of Christmas cards, sent them to all your friends and family and were stuck with half a dozen extra that you didn’t know what to do with? Write a note of encouragement, support and thanks and send it on. Feel free to involve your kids or students too! Who doesn’t like a colourful Christmas drawing or message from a child? According to the Op. Santa Claus info sheets (attached), cards & letters give a “feeling of home and renewed support and inspiration to our men and women serving so far away. Soldiers line up to read handfuls of these cards before passing them on to the next person waiting in line.” Op. Santa Claus accepts gift donations until August 31, 2010 and Christmas cards and cash donations until October 31, 2010. Please see the attached information sheets for drop off locations and items that would be particularly appreciated.
Contact Christie Johnson at 403-280-2796 or knityourbitcanada at gmail.com
Also, currently there are only drop off locations in Calgary. If you are part of a legion in Edmonton and would like to be involved, please speak with Christie or Shirley Penny at 613-995-8770 or shirley.penny at forces.gc.ca.

If you knit and have run out of willing relatives to wear your hats and scarves, consider knitting or crocheting slippers, hats, gloves, socks, scarves and other items suitable for harsh climates.

It was a beautiful day on Sunday as the race wound it’s way around North Glenmore Park. It was a great turnout with even the Stampede Queen and Princesses showing up. The Calgary Stars Gymnastics team were onsite and did a fantastic job of cheering on the runners.
We had some great runners out there including several soldiers training for the 2010 Mountain Man Exercise. For that they will run 32k with a 15Kg Rucksack, then a 3.2km canoe portage followed by a 10k paddle on the river then a quick 5.6k march to the finish line. Kudos to them!
Here they are with Dave Murphy from ThankASoldier.

It was a great day that we had and many thanks to all of the hard working volunteers. We look forward to another great event next year!
